A blog about living with ALS - and more

December Break

I’m taking December off from publishing a new post. I’m trying to solve some technical issues with my blog website. Incidentally, AI is surprisingly helpful in this realm. There’s no time limit like there is with live people. Whenever I chat with an actual human, it takes me so long to type that the person always asks me if I’m still there, even though I have prefaced the whole interaction with an explanation of my situation, and please don’t end the chat if I take a long time to respond. This doesn’t happen with AI. The explanations I get from AI have been better than those from humans, and I don’t worry about sounding dumb. Well, this turned into a little post after all.

I have a request for all of you. If you received the notification for this post, please let me know via posting a comment that states that you did, or send me an email.

I did read your post. I’m glad someone has something good to say about AI.
The advice is very helpful. I think it’s good to for everyone to think about slowing down since so much of communication now involves quickies — a single letter for a word.

Hi Jessie, Message received. Thank you for sending. Denie

I did receive notification. Thanks for writing.

And I’m glad to hear that AI is helpful in certain situations.
I continue to hope that AI will be scaled back from where it has been inserted into much of our lives and will be used in the places where it’s genuinely needed (like health and sciences).

    Wishing you the best!
    David

I’ve always thought AI had the potential to be beneficial. Glad it’s showing it’s positive usefulness. Have a Happy New Year 🎊

I’m retired now Jessie, so I can be as patient (if not so intelligent) as AI.

    Let’s chat.

    Thinking of you always.

      Dear Jessie,
First, I did receive the notification about your new post.
Second, thanks for your thoughtful comments about AI. I’ve also found it to be a helpful aid in summarizing the results of internet searches. Of course it does sometimes make mistakes and get things quite wrong, so I’ve tried to stay aware of that possibility. (And as we all know, we humans never make mistakes or get things wrong!) In any case, it’s interesting to follow the developing capabilities of AI.
Wishing you all the best in the new year!

I got it! And owe you an update email (promise that it will be 100% my own work, and not AI 😜)

Often with live chat it seems like I’m talking to a 20-year-old in Romania or India because they don’t understand my question. AI can be very good but it depends on the information you seek. At times I’ve asked 5 different AI chatbots the same question and I’ve gotten 5 different answers. Happy holidays Jessie *<:-)

Hi Jessie! Happy New Year! I received a notification about the post. Sending love to you!

I got your message! Happy AI is beneficial for you! Personally, I have been wondering if it’s making me less smart since it does all my research for me! 😳

I got it, Jessie! It’s a brave new world! Greg has said AI has been helpful in his work. I second David Lasky’s thoughts. 🤞 I haven’t used AI to produce anything so far myself as i havent had any reason to and I am definitely a Luddite by nature. LOL, AI just fixed the word Luddite for me. I wasn’t going to capitalize it. Thanks for all the sharing, Jessie!

    Dear Jessie,
Yes, I saw your post, and we were in Mexico, so it travels internationally!
I can imagine your frustration with getting cut off as you type, especially after explaining in advance. I am very glad you are getting help that is actually Help!
Looking forward to our visit on Wednesday!
    Warmly,
    Julia

  17. Jessie – Impatience is certainly an aspect of my persona. Thank you for expressing yourself as you have. Culturally, I believe that we learn to feel uncomfortable with silence. Things have to move along at a hurried and frantic pace. I am reminded of this whenever I happen to cross a span over a freeway. Silence does not mean that there is nothing being communicated. Outside of our dining area window near the fence to the neighbor’s yard there is a memorial I have built with a small statue of Buddha as the center piece. I am not a religious person by any means but the Buddha signifies to me the existential beauty intrinsic in the moment even in silence.
